In relation to the history of humanity, formal schooling as we know it is a very recent development. Only 2 centuries ago, education was reserved for the elite and a mere 12% of the world’s population could read and write. In the years that followed, formal education became more commonplace and now the global literacy rate is around 82%.

What this means is that we are still watching teaching methods and education evolve before our eyes, and what may seem as a tried and tested system may not be the best fit for every child.

For years we have been told that children must attend school and learn the Three Rs (Reading, Writing and Arithmetic) while sitting at a desk and listening to the teacher. Until very recently, children were tested using tests and examinations, making sure they could repeat facts parrot-fashion, rather than their understanding of concepts. Unfortunately, this means learners often leave school able to memorise facts and recite dates robot style, but with few coping mechanisms for the real world and being part of the workforce. Continuous assessment has only really been introduced in the last 30 years, but even this doesn’t solve the problem of all children being expected to learn at the same pace as their peers.

Even if we take the actual subject matter and teaching methods out of the equation, some children simply aren’t emotionally able to thrive in formal, traditional schools. Sadly, bullying is still a reality for far too many children, and those perceived as different are often easy targets. With class numbers sometimes into the 40s, monitoring and stopping bullying is an impossible task for teachers who are already overwhelmed with trying to make sure they keep up with the set curriculum.

It’s no secret that the South African Education system is less than ideal. Many government schools are underfunded and overcrowded and our current dropout rate is sitting at around 24% by the time children are in Grade 11. While a large portion of these dropouts can be attributed to financial issues (28% of all dropouts cannot afford school fees), 14% of dropouts said their reason for not continuing with formal education is either the inability to perform or that schooling is useless or boring.

One has to wonder if these children would have completed their education if another option was offered? If these learners had received one on one attention and had a more flexible approach to learning offered, would this encourage them to persevere?

Many parents are now realising that mainstream schooling is not the best education option for their children. Mainstream schools may work for enough children that they remain relevant, but unless your child fits a very small margin of criteria, there is probably a better option available.

In the past, homeschooling had a certain aura of oddness around it, with homeschooled children considered outcasts and socially awkward, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Many people don’t even know that homeschooling is no longer necessarily parents educating their children. The need for alternative education options have led to the rise of home-based learning centres or cottage schools, which focus on small groups of children, sometimes of various ages, following a homeschool or online educational programs under the guidance of a teacher.

The obvious advantage of this is that the children reap the benefits of learning in a group while still having the freedom to learn at their own pace and with much more individual attention. They can spend more time on subjects where they battle to grasp concepts and move on quickly when they understand the subject matter, instead of having to wait for the rest of the class to catch up.

Smaller groups mean less chance of learning difficulties being missed and when they are discovered, the teacher leading the homeschool group has the ability to devote more attention to the child. There’s also a much smaller chance of meanness and bullying in a small group, while children don’t miss out on chances to socialise.

This is an altogether gentler approach to educating children, with forward-thinking curriculums that ensure they leave school prepared for life and not just with a head full of mostly useless facts. Learning centres offer the best of both worlds, allowing parents the peace of mind that comes from knowing their children are receiving a progressive, internationally recognised education under supervision while avoiding the issues that are often faced with traditional government schooling.

Is it not time for you to consider this option for your children?
